A Blessed Lammas (Lughnasadh) to
Friends in the Northern Hemisphere!
Those of us in the Northern Hemisphere are observing Lammas – also known as Lughnasadh – the time of the First Harvest. Today, we honor the summer and sun, and give thanks for the beginning of the harvest season and resulting bounty.
Today, we honor the wisdom of our elders, as well as the knowledge we each have gained during the year. As we move mindfully through our day, we know that the God is losing his strength as the Sun rises farther in the south daily, and the nights grow longer.
Themes today will be ones of preparation – readying ourselves for the waning year and the end of life. This is a great day for making oat, wheat or corn breads, for harvesting herbs, picnicking, country dancing and competitions such as spear tossing.
This is a wonderful time for rituals involving success and prosperity, good fortune and abundance. It’s a great time for completing projects that you’ve started. It’s a time to be generous – think of the ever-flowing cup, the chalice of plenty.
Why not invite your older relatives to join you in a harvest festival tonight? Plan a meal with lovely things harvested from your garden: summer squash, berries, apples, nuts and grapes. A lovely loaf of bread is customary for this Sabbat, as are drinks of wine, mead, cider and beer.
Wishing you a Blessed Lammas
